The instrument Cyndi Lauper was playing was most likely a dulcimer.
I got to see Cyndi open for Tina Turner during the "Wildest Dreams" tour, and she did a special section during her show in which she did a dulcimer duet with a professor of music from the University of Tennessee. The instruments looked the way you described.
